   Tough question, and hard to answer… but I’ll try…..

   Those words “hmph” and “hmrf” and “mumf” and similar words that make no sense should be read like a grunt or a groan or a yawn or a sigh. These examples or other combination of letters indicate the noises that someone makes when they answer (or talk) without saying any actual words.

   For example if you watch some people play tennis you can hear them grunt and groan as they hit the ball. Ughh…. gnyaa…. humph….waarraaa….. Yosh!!

   Or if someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer you could grunt and walk off. Hrmm……

   Or for example if you wake up and make a noise while you yawn. Urnnn….. yarrres…. Ohayo!!

   There could be many many many many more examples and used in many many many many situations.

   It is very diffucult to explain and can be only understood in the context of the dialogue.

   Now Mr Weasley… from that quote I think his “mpfh” expression it is as if he wasn’t properly listening to what the other people were saying because he was so intent on peeling his Satsuma!!!

   And finally a Japanese example…

   Like how Japanese tv hosts always go “eeeeeeh???”when they see a vaacum cleaner suck up some dust, eeeeeeehh???? or they eat some food, eeeeeeeeeeeeeehhh or see a special person. eeeeeeeeH
