節分を英語で説明する（豆まき、恵方巻き）

2月3日は節分です。オンライン英会話スクールでは「今日は節分だよ！」と説明したいと思う人も多いでしょう。

正直、私もなかなか日本の年中行事や文化を説明することが出来ません。

事ある毎になるべくブログでうまく話せるような英文を書いてみたいなと思っています。

・まずは節分 Setsubun

Setsubun literally means “the day between two seasons”. People celebrate Setsubun on either the 3rd or 4th of February, the day before the first spring day on the present calendar.

特に立春2月4日の前日を示す模様です。上記文章が端的に節分を説明していて話しやすいと思います。

また、Setsubun isn’t a national holiday.とか補足していくと良さそうです。

節分の行事といえば、やはり豆まきです。これは説明したいところ

・豆まき Bean Throwing Ceremony

Bean throwing called mamemaki is done at home on the night of Setsubun. People scatter roasted soy beans inside and outside their houses shouting, “Fortune in, devils out”.

 

Then they eat the same number of beans as their age and wish for good health. Bean is “mame” in Japanese which means good health.

 

At some houses, where there are especially young children, one of the family members (usually the father) act as an "Oni", and the kids throw beans at him to make him ran away.

豆をまくの動詞にscatterがいい感じですね。
後はoniというものを出す必要がありますが、説明が難しそうです。

Oni are a kind of “yokai”. They are gigantic ogre-like creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads.

最後に全国の風習にもなりつつある恵方巻きも

・恵方巻き sushi roll

Eating “Ehou-maki” is another special traditional event which has become popular recently. ”Ehou-maki” is a sushi roll made from rice, cucumber, shiitake mushroom, eel and so on. They say if you eat it facing the happy direction while keeping quiet, you will become happy.

恵方というのは説明は大変なのでhappy directionで十分だと思います。もともと太巻きを無言で全部食べきるものだと思っていましたが、今ではいろいろな巻がスーパーに出ていて、完全巻きずしを売りたいだけみたいになってきました。

私は関西出身なので昔から恵方巻きはしていましたが、最近の全国区への代わりはコンビニが仕掛けた模様ですね。

日本＝寿司はありますので恵方巻きも話のネタには良いと思います。

なかなか例文通りに説明は難しいかもしれませんが、キーワードを端的に丁寧に説明していけば相手も分かってくれます。またオンライン英会話スクールでは先生が他の生徒からも同じようなことを聞いていると思うので、会話が成り立ちやすいと思います。
